Common questions

What is gamma exposure?
An estimate of how much dealers must buy or sell the stock as its price moves, summed from the open interest at each strike. Positive gamma tends to damp moves; negative gamma tends to amplify them.
Is a gamma exposure number exact?
No. Every tool assumes which side the dealers are on, and the assumption can be wrong. Two tools can show different numbers for the same ticker; the levels where gamma piles up matter more than the total.
Which gamma exposure tools are free?
FlashAlpha shows free charts per ticker. This desk publishes a free daily dealer map and a free gamma read on every public stock page. SpotGamma and Unusual Whales have paid plans.
Does gamma exposure work on small caps?
Less well. Gamma needs deep open interest to move the stock; on a thin chain the estimate is noisy. It is most useful on the index, the large ETFs and the names with heavy option volume.
